The Tippmann 98 Custom is one of the company’s most popular and reliable woodsball and scenario paintball markers. Its sleek look, high power and reliable performance make it an aggressive choice in paintball guns. Tippmann has made the 98 Custom exceptionally useful stock marker with plenty of options for modification and personalization.
The strengths of the original Tippman 98 are continued in the excellent 98 Custom core marker system. The aluminum die cast receiver feels durable without being too heavy. To service the 98 Custom, Tippmann constructed the body with a centerline split that is easily accessed by removing six Allen wrench screws and bolts. The 98 Custom features a removable trigger guard that was previously part of the original’s casing, which enables the simple upgrade to a responsive trigger. Small pins are used internally to ensure consistent alignment for true firing action. Aligning the pins can be a slightly tedious process, but with practice the procedure becomes intuitive. Another advantage to the aluminum die cast chassis is the ability to use simple aluminum polish on the inside of the receiver housing to ensure a near frictionless movement if one chooses to modify the 98 Custom to fully automatic.
The self-sealing power tube design helps to make the Tippmann 98 Custom a more efficiently sealed system that is still easily accessed for cleaning and maintenance and will effectively operate on CO2, compressed air, or nitrogen. The stock guts make this marker a .68 caliber semi-automatic at an eight ball per second firing rate with an effective range of 150 feet. Optional upgrades like the flat-line barrel help to dial in the Tippmann 98 Custom’s long-range accuracy. An anti-chop ball handling system also ensures that this Tippmann can perform worry free at higher firing rates made possible through ball-feed and trigger upgrades.
The beauty of the Tippmann 98 Custom is the wide array of optional upgrades. Its performance and accuracy can be improved though this marker is highly effective, and visually intimidating, out of the box. The stock hopper holds 200 rounds and is attached with a quick release feeder elbow that easily slides out of the way to admit a squeegee should the marker require a fast field cleaning. Tippmann’s inclusion of Picatinny rails allow for the easy attachment of accessories like scopes. The Tippmann 98 Custom is a workhorse of the paintball world.
Paintball guns are becoming more and more specialized as the diversity of game play expands. Many paintball guns on the market today are excellent for use in a particular style of play, which can be limiting because of the high investment cost for a core marker. This is where Tippmann excels beyond the competition with the 98 Custom. Advantages that were limited to other markers like the response triggers and scenario aesthetic modification kits are now all compatible with the Tippmann 98 Custom. The casing and power tube are versatile enough to perform as a speedball or sniper marker when matched with the appropriate Tippmann upgrades.
